My XNET device is not connected to any port. Why don”t you report an error when running the LabVIEW program?

Question:
I use CAN (Control Area Network) VIs to write data to the XNET (Extended Network) device PXI-8512 while running the program. I did not connect anything to the NI PXI-8512 XNET device when I ran the program. The second LED on PXI-8512 is off, indicating that the port is not activated but LabVIEW does not prompt an error message to indicate that no CAN frames have been received from other devices. Instead, the program continues to run as normal.
When I mistakenly connected the device to an interface device such as NI USB-8473, a similar problem also occurred. The first LED light on the device remains normal.
Answer:
This is the expected condition of an XNET device. In fact, the second LED light off means there is no communication between the hardware and XNET driver, but LabVIEW will not prompt an error. This is due to the way XNET driver handles errors.
The XNET processing mechanism distinguishes between errors and faults. Error refers to the execution issue of VI in XNET functionality or program diagram. A fault refers to a problem that occurs when executing to a specific node, and also includes communication issues. These information can be found in the NI-XNET hardware and software manual (refer to the relevant link section) according to “Fault Handling”.
Using an instance of XNET READ VI to report errors and implement error handling, LabVIEW interrupts code execution whenever a fault occurs. The XNET manual provides a great example of how to operate it.
