The Future of System 1
Reinventing Asset Management
Bentley Nevada is one of the condition monitoring companies and can correctly claim that they first invented the entire concept of asset management
– Control Magazine, April 2000
In process intensive industries, a major component of the current digital revolution is the adoption of Asset Performance Management (APM) tools aimed at optimizing the availability of operational assets. The potential for making smarter decisions is driving industrial operators to find a single asset management tool that covers all asset levels, from machine chassis to the entire facility, and includes analytical insights.
When reflecting on the initial vision of System 1, it is evident that Asset Performance Management (APM) is an evolution of the Factory Asset Management (PAM) concept that Bentley Nevada helped pioneer over 20 years ago – they even share the same three letters! Both are committed to achieving overall asset management, utilizing data capture, integration, analysis, and visualization to improve operational and maintenance time, and determining which maintenance and inspection activities to perform on industrial assets. So, how can Bentley Nevada continue to innovate in this constantly evolving asset management field?

First, we are based on unparalleled edge data collection – managing more than 100000 assets, installing more than 6000000 sensors, and deploying more than 300000 Bentley Nevada Edge device worldwide. This data can be connected to System 1 Evo together with process and control system data for comprehensive plant condition monitoring. Our customers are now able to use this full stack asset management product.

Next, we will leverage the domain expertise accumulated in innovation over the past 60 years and embed this knowledge as analytical insights into our products. System 1 decision support is our conditional analysis workbench that can be directly integrated into System 1 Evo, supporting fault pattern recognition and new insights into machine and process conditions. Bently Nevada is collaborating with our mechanical diagnostic engineers and client partners to develop a vision for decision support and expand its conditional predictive analysis insights over time. The first version of decision support will be released in August 2020, and supporting Orbit articles will be released in the third quarter of 2020.
Finally, we are working to enhance the visualization and workflow capabilities of System 1 throughout the entire asset group. Customers with a large number of assets and a System 1 database will be able to use the Performance indicator (KPIs) provided by decision support to determine the priority of assets, use the drawing toolset to support front-line analysis of asset health, directly connect with System 1 Evo for more in-depth diagnostic analysis, track and manage asset health over time, and interact with Enterprise asset management to share insights across external systems. This concept is still in the early stages of development and there is no promised availability date. However, Bentley Nevada is enthusiastic about adding this product to our asset management products.
Technology+professional knowledge=first-class solutions
Within process intensive industries, Bently Nevada’s Condition Monitoring solutions have long been regulated as best in class This is largely in part to the spoken and passive Bently Nevada team that works tirely to deliver products and services that not only meet customer needs, but exceeded their expectations
Speaking for myself, I have had the great fortune of learning from many of these experts throughout my 8-year career I was mentioned by both Ken Ceglia and Bob Spriggs, two of the original three masters behind the System 1 Classic platform In addition, I have been lucky to work day in and day out with an experienced and dedicated leadership and development team guiding the evolution of System 1 from Classic to Evo, all of whom are steelfast in delivering the world’s best asset management platform for all industries
Finally, most of my ‘on-the-job’ learning came from outside Bentley’s headquarters, where I studied asset management practices and collected feedback on product improvement. It was during these meetings that I benefited greatly from the rich knowledge of our regional Bently experts and end customers, whom we consider our partners. From this experience, I realized that to truly innovate, cooperation is necessary!
I look forward to working with our team to continue guiding Bently Nevada’s asset management solutions over the next 20 years. If there are any signs of our past and present, the future looks bright!
In April 2021, Baker Hughes acquired ARMS Reliability as part of Bentley’s Nevada business. ARMS Reliability’s extensive asset management and reliability solutions, software, and expertise extend Bently Nevada’s product portfolio and provide customers with unparalleled asset performance management capabilities.
executive summary
A large global chemical company faced the challenge of inconsistent Root cause analysis (RCA) methods, which produced mixed results. The customer wishes to use OnePM ® Embed standard survey methods to provide visibility into learning across multiple sites.
ARMS Reliability is responsible for leading the project, which involves training, change management, and integrating OnePM ® Promote to over 40 sites in Africa, Asia, and Europe.
Customers now benefit from more consistent and high-quality surveys and interconnected datasets, enabling them to leverage learning outcomes and solutions across sites. Other results include:
Over 220 investigations were conducted within 9 months, of which 60% were closed during the same period
A single survey can save millions of dollars, resulting in savings of over $500000
More capable of applying solutions to similar assets and preventing problems from happening again
problem
The customer’s previous RCA method was unstructured. There is no unified regulation on which events need to be investigated and when to conduct investigations, nor is there a common process to follow. Another issue is the lack of effective methods for tracking and investigating websites until they are resolved.
As a heavy asset enterprise with mission critical operations, customers need RCA’s standard methods to assist sites in conducting quality surveys and generating effective solutions. It also requires a system that can support the execution of solutions and prevent problems from happening again.
Solution
The customer chooses to use the standard RCA method, which will generate an evidence-based understanding of the problem and generate a solution for the proven cause.
ARMS Reliability collaborates with clients to promote the adoption of RCA methods at over 40 sites in multiple countries. This includes establishing clear trigger points for when to conduct investigations, as well as improving the skills of over 70 employees to serve as RCA coordinators and subject matter experts. Most of the training is provided remotely through webinars, supplemented by internal user group meetings.
Deploy OnePM ® It is to eliminate data silos and provide a centralized system for tracking and reporting investigations and solutions. This enables RCA to be managed as a central activity and promotes the sharing of knowledge and best practices. For example, customers can now apply the lessons learned from a survey to prevent similar assets from experiencing similar failures at other sites.
benefit
Standard method for cross site embedding
The training and consulting of ARMS Reliability have helped clients improve employee skills and promoted the adoption of standard RCA methods at over 40 sites in multiple countries.
Rapid implementation
OnePM ® Deployed within three weeks, ARMS Reliability has promoted rapid adoption by training and encouraging internal subject matter experts to hold their own meetings for users to share experiences and raise questions.
Increase in successful surveys
The clear trigger points have led to an increasing number of investigations, with over 220 investigations conducted in the first nine months. Sixty percent of them were closed during the same time period.
Significant cost savings
Based on the actions taken to prevent a problem from recurring, it is expected to save one million dollars in costs. In addition, by identifying critical equipment failures and other events, customers can take action to extend asset life and reduce risk.
