Baker Hughes’ Bently Nevada is collaborating with Approval to make hydrogen operations safer, more reliable, and more efficient
Earlier this year, Baker Hughes won a contract from Approvium to deploy Bently Nevada’s innovative asset health monitoring technology in three hydrogen production plants in South Korea. This solution will provide early warning alerts and machine diagnosis to assist in the operation and maintenance of the Approtium Digital Chemical Plant, and achieve safe, reliable, and efficient operation.
Approval specializes in the manufacturing and distribution of hydrogen and liquefied CO2, with a 60 kilometer hydrogen pipeline network, a large fleet of 250 high-pressure transport ships, and two reforming plants, producing over 100000 tons of hydrogen annually. As part of the contract, Bentley Nevada will deploy its Orbit 60 next-generation monitoring technology, over 150 sensors, and System 1 software. The installation started in the second quarter and is expected to continue until the third quarter of 2023.
James Kim, CEO of Approval, stated, “We provide services to over 145 customers in key industries in South Korea, including petrochemicals, refining, semiconductor production, and mobile stations, to meet emerging demand requirements. We provide hydrogen safely, reliably, and competitively.” Digital factory operations and maintenance are crucial to ensuring a sound operating system, thereby optimizing our asset performance. We are very happy to cooperate with Bentley Nevada in this effort, and look forward to working with other companies in Baker Hughes to continue to support decarbonization in the Korean energy and industrial markets. ”
KH Hor, Vice President of Bentley Nevada Asia Pacific, said, “We are pleased to collaborate with industry leader Approval, which specializes in the manufacturing and distribution of hydrogen and liquefied carbon dioxide. This award builds on the successful and long-term partnership between the two companies. By providing early warning alerts and machine diagnostics, our goal is to improve the safety, reliability, and efficiency of Approval’s hydrogen operations
Baker Hughes and its business portfolio (such as Bentley Nevada) are committed to helping customers achieve energy and industrial decarbonization to create a more sustainable, fair and clean future. Bentley Nevada has over 60 years of experience, and its innovative hardware, software, and services can help customers improve the security and productivity of industrial assets while keeping the world’s infrastructure at easeMinden, Nevada – June 20, 2023 – The Safety Consulting and Training Section (SCATS) of the Nevada Department of Industrial Relations recognized Bentley Nevada, a Baker Hughes enterprise, successfully renewed as a participant in the Voluntary Protection Plan (VPP) with its headquarters in Minden, Nevada. This plan recognizes employers and workers who have implemented effective safety and health management systems and maintained injury and disease rates below the industry averages of the National Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Bentley Nevada has maintained its VPP status for nearly 20 years and continues to collaborate with SCATS consultants to strengthen its commitment to operating safely and responsibly in a way that takes care of employees, customers, partners, communities, and the environment. 330850-90-05 Transient Data Interface Card
“The health and safety of employees and workplaces is our top priority. It is integrated into everything we do and the way we work,” said Angie McMillin, vice president of Baker Hughes Bentley Nevada. The cooperation with SCATS helps to enhance our ability to provide a safer workplace at the Minden factory and supports our employees in actively maintaining health and safety, thereby advancing our goal of ensuring that there are no injuries, accidents, illnesses, or environmental hazards every day
Participating in free programs can motivate and support employers to develop, implement, and continuously improve plans in their workplaces. Taking these proactive measures helps businesses reduce accident costs and ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.
Todd Schultz, chief Administrator of the government of SCATS, said: “Bently Nevada is a part of elite enterprise groups. These enterprises have gained VPP status by maintaining positive health and safety agreements to prevent death, injury and disease.” “They are recognized leaders in terms of employees.” Health and safety in the energy and industrial sectors. They have always been committed to safety, putting employees first, and working with such companies is inspiring
SCATS consultants provide confidential hazard identification, plan development, implementation assistance, and training to employers. Successful VPP participants are exempt from OSHA enforcement program inspections.
Baker Hughes and its business portfolio (such as Bentley Nevada) are committed to achieving the highest health, safety and environmental standards, achieving net zero emissions from operations by 2050, and supporting sustainable communities where employees live and work. Bently Nevada, headquartered in Minden, Nevada, has 60 years of experience in innovative hardware, software, and services to help customers improve the security and productivity of industrial assets while providing peace of mind for the world’s infrastructure.

System 1 Classic
The Vision of ‘One System’ Born
Factory Asset Management (PAM) is a holistic asset management concept introduced in the late 1990s, with a focus on maximizing the performance and availability of production assets while minimizing their lifecycle costs. As the ARC Advisory Group recorded in 2000, “Almost all end users in the process industry are increasingly adopting asset management as a strategy to improve process efficiency and improve return on assets (ROA).”
For over 60 years, Bentley Nevada has always led the industry with its innovative solutions. Therefore, it is not surprising that the company became an early leader in the PAM field and launched System 1 to the market in 2000.
Through System 1, Bentley Nevada has developed a platform with rich connectivity, analysis, and visualization capabilities, including:
Data collection interface, focusing on data types other than vibration
Flexible software alerts that can be configured for any measurement in the system
Automated diagnosis and analysis providing new insights
Comprehensive Run chart can realize data correlation regardless of source
Any user of System 1 Classic can enjoy the rich feature set that can be recorded by filling out pages. However, the widespread adoption of solutions is not limited to technology, but also requires consideration of the personnel and workflow involved in integrating the tool. The third quarter edition of Orbit magazine in 2001 documented the necessity of surpassing technological innovation: “Successful management of factory assets not only requires the right tools, but also the necessary behavioral changes to accept and use new methods to conduct business. To quote the famous management consultant Ollie White,” Playing golf requires a club, but skills are in the hands of users.
Although System 1 is an extremely powerful tool, in many ways, its vision predates the maturity of our customers, their network architecture (including remote connections), and Bently’s own factory wide equipment products.
The user experience does not seamlessly support our users’ status monitoring processes, many of which were established or actively developed in the early 2000s. This leads to a more limited adoption – mainly in the role of expert engineering.
As network security standards become stricter, the deployment of System 1 on the process network limits its accessibility, preventing it from being used as an active status monitoring platform, thereby limiting its wider adoption within customer organizations.
Finally, Bentley Nevada’s entire plant investment portfolio is not mature for critical and sub critical assets, which hinders the overall asset management of the platform.
System 1 Classic has been and will continue to be a key tool for many of our customers. However, in our continuous efforts to provide innovative products, Bentley Nevada began developing the next generation System 1 platform with the goal of learning from past lessons and achieving the initial vision proposed in 2000.
System 1 Evolution
The vision of the entire factory has been realized
When embarking on the development of the next generation System 1 (informally known as Evo), the product management team participated in numerous industry and regional customer seminars. By conducting research on over 500 end users in 25 countries/regions, we investigated the team dynamics, on-site processes, and technical suites of our clients to determine how System 1 can best support plant-wide asset monitoring.
As a result of this study, we created a status monitoring workflow (as shown below), emphasizing how personnel, processes, and technology can be combined to perform asset management. Interestingly (fortunately), this process of detection, diagnosis, and corrective measures is consistent across various industries, enabling the System 1 team to develop a seamless user experience that supports status monitoring users and their processes. The integration of each new feature can enhance one or more customer use cases while maintaining consistency in interaction and visual patterns.
