Features and functions
Large engines operating in lean gas fuel mixtures often experience slower fuel combustion rates and incomplete combustion. A typical J-gap spark plug attempts to solve these performance problems by increasing spark energy, which shortens the lifespan of the plug. In order to cope with the decline in spark plug life, J-GAP manufacturers often increase the electrode area, which produces a “quenching” effect on the ignition spark and increases the variability of combustion; Alternatively, they use precious metals, which increases manufacturing complexity and reduces the durability of the plug.
