In the early 1970s, Dr. James Chuchard, Bill Nolin, and Jeff Kodowski, three young people, worked in the Applied Research Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin. Because of their research on US Navy projects, these individuals used early computer technology to collect and analyze data. At that time, the inefficiency of data collection methods made them very frustrated, so they decided to create a new product to make their tasks easier. In 1976, in the garage of James Chuchard”s house, three young men established a company.
At the beginning, the company had some ideas such as “Longhorn Instrument” and “Texas Data”, but they were rejected when submitting applications, so it finally adopted the current name: “National Instruments”.
After the establishment of the company, it borrowed 10000 dollars from Interfirst Bank and purchased a PDP-11 Minicomputer. Setting up and constructing the GPIB interface was the first project taken over by the company, and the first successful order was promoted to Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio. Due to the three individuals being employed by the school, they hired their first full-time staff in 1977 to handle orders, billing, and customer service. With the expansion of the company”s transaction volume, they moved to a 56 square meter office in 1978.
In 1980, the three of them resigned from school and devoted themselves full-time to the development of the company. The company also moved to a 500 square meter office. To help generate revenue, the company took over many special projects, including the oil pump credit card system and the waveform generator required for US Navy sonar testing. By 1981, the company had reached a sales target of $1 million, so they relocated to a larger office with 1000 square meters in 1982.
