What are I/O points?
When discussing control systems, I/O points are the most commonly heard term. It refers to the input/output point, where I represents Input, indicating input, and O represents OUTPUT, indicating output. Input/output refers to the measurement parameters that enter the control system from the instrument, and output refers to the parameters that output from the control system to the actuator. Each parameter is called a point. The size of a control system is sometimes determined by the maximum number of I/O points it can control.

Another common term in control systems is analog quantity and switching quantity. Regardless of input or output, a parameter is either an analog quantity or a switching quantity. Analog quantity refers to a continuous numerical value that varies within a certain range in the control system, such as temperature, from 0-100 degrees, pressure from 0-10MPA, liquid level from 1-5 meters, electric valve opening from 0-100%, etc. These quantities are all analog quantities. The switch quantity refers to the physical quantity that has only two states, such as the on and off states of the switch, the closed and open states of the relay, and the on and off states of the solenoid valve.
For control systems, since the CPU is binary and each data has two states of “0” and “1”, the switch value can be represented by only one bit inside the CPU, for example, “0” represents on and “1” represents off. Analog quantity, on the other hand, usually requires 8 to 16 bits to represent an analog quantity based on accuracy. The most common analog quantity is 12 bits, with an accuracy of 2-12, and the highest accuracy is about 2.5 parts per ten thousand. Of course, in actual control systems, the accuracy of analog signals is also limited by the accuracy of analog/digital converters and instruments, and it is usually impossible to achieve such a high level.

There are many types of board cards based on PC bus, and there are also many classification methods. According to the different types of signal processing on the board, it can be divided into analog input board (A/D card), analog output board (D/A card), switch input board, switch output board, pulse input board, multifunctional board, etc. The multifunctional board can integrate multiple functions, such as the digital input/output board integrating analog input and digital input/output on the same card. According to the different buses, it can be divided into PXI/CPCI boards and PCI boards.
In industrial control, some control objects are input and output of switching values, specifically requiring the use of digital I/O boards. Digital I/O boards are used in devices that control switch inputs and outputs, and most devices cannot do without the control of input and output quantities.
The main technical indicators of the digital I/O board are as follows:
1. Isolation parameters:
Some boards have isolation measures, while others do not. Generally, isolation measures are required to increase anti-interference ability. If there are isolation measures, attention should be paid to the size of the isolation voltage. Isolation voltage is an important parameter. If the isolation voltage is not selected correctly, it can damage the isolation circuit, and sometimes even the entire board.
2. Input voltage range:
At the input end of the board, an input voltage should be applied to each input signal. If the input voltage is too low, the computer will not respond. If the input voltage is too high, it will damage the board. When using it, attention should be paid to the selection of input voltage.
3. Input response time and output establishment time
From the nonlinearity of semiconductors, it can be seen that when the input voltage is applied to the input terminal, the circuit does not immediately respond and usually needs to be demonstrated for a period of time. Although this delay time is very short (a few microseconds to tens of microseconds) and cannot be felt by people, it must be considered when writing programs, especially when the input terminal is a high-speed switch.
