What is serial communication?
Serial communication refers to a communication mode in which data can be transmitted in bits with only one receiving line and one sending line. Although the serial communication is slower than the parallel communication by byte transmission, the serial port can realize data transmission with only two lines.
Typical serial communication is completed with three wires, namely, ground wire, transmission and reception. Because serial communication is asynchronous, the port can send data on one line and receive data on another line. The most important parameters of serial communication are baud rate, data bit, stop bit and parity check. For two ports that need serial communication, these parameters must match, which is also the premise of realizing serial communication.

At first, the data was the simple process quantity of analog signal output. Later, RS232 interface appeared in the instrument interface. This interface can realize the point-to-point communication mode, but this mode cannot realize the networking function, which promoted RS485.
We know that the data transmission of serial communication is 0 and 1. In single bus, I2C and UART, the logic 1 or logic 0 is judged by the high and low level of a line. However, the GND of this signal line forms a common ground mode communication with other devices. This common ground mode transmission is easy to generate interference, and the anti-interference performance is also weak. Therefore, RS485 with differential communication, support for multi-computer communication and strong anti-interference is widely used.
The biggest feature of RS485 communication is that the transmission speed can reach more than 10Mb/s and the transmission distance can reach about 3000 meters. It should be noted that although the maximum speed and maximum transmission distance of 485 are very large, the transmission speed will slow down with the increase of distance, so they can”t have both.
