48 Volt Challenge
High-end manufacturers have already begun incorporating 48-volt batteries into their vehicles, and this trend is expected to
expand to all cars in the future. Eventually, 48-volt batteries may completely replace today”s 12-volt batteries. With a 48 volt battery
, for a given amount of power, higher voltage means less current, which means less power loss – due to the relationship P=I2R.
For today”s affected high-end cars, 48-volt batteries will be used in applications requiring 500 watts and above, such as power steering, water pumps, turbochargers,
suspension system control, and drivetrains and transmissions. Additionally, some of these vehicles will be close to hybrids, with
the batteries providing actual movement during times when the vehicle is barely moving, such as during traffic jams and stops.
The 12-volt battery will primarily serve passenger compartment needs such as the infotainment system and interior lighting.
AEC-Q200
AEC-Q200 is an international standard developed by the Automotive Electronics Council (AEC) to manage automotive passive
electrical components. It specifies requirements for temperature, humidity and resistance to thermal shock – with
different requirements for the passenger compartment and exterior areas.
Voltage spike protection is included, and the standards set for 48-volt components are much higher than those
for 12-volt components. For the full-scale 400-volt or 500-volt batteries that pure electric vehicles will use, the standards are even higher.
