I cannot see my third-party USB instrument in Measurement&Automation Explorer (MAX), but it exists as a USB instrument in Windows Device Manager. Why do we see this phenomenon and how can we solve it so that we can communicate with the instrument?
My USB-6343 performs normally in Windows Device Manager, but in MAX, there is a yellow triangle and a message is displayed: There was a problem updating the settings for this device. The operation timed out.
I cannot see my 3rd Party USB devices in MAX, but I can communicate with them through the command line, so I know they are connected. What do I need to do to see my device in MAX?
Solution
If the device is displayed in the Windows Device Manager, it indicates that the Windows machine can recognize the USB device and has associated a specific driver to communicate with the device. One possible reason why the instrument did not display in MAX is that Windows did not associate the correct driver with the device.
Check if the NI-VISA driver is installed on the computer. If doing so, please check the compatibility between NI-VISA and LabVIEW, as well as the compatibility between NI-VISA and the operating system. If not, please visit the NI-VISA download page and download and install the appropriate driver. Please ensure to restart the computer after installation.
Try resetting the MAX database, as described in the article on how to repair or reset the NI MAX database file.
If you are using a third-party VISA device on the same computer, you may need to set NI-VISA as the primary VISA implementation, as described in the NI VISA article after installing third-party VISA software.
Uninstall and reinstall the NI-VISA driver. When reinstalling, if possible, disable all firewalls and antivirus software.
If NI-VISA is installed, please try re associating the USB device to use the NI-VISA driver:

Question: I want to use NI”s counting/timer or M-series board to perform edge counting on my input signal and reset the count with another pulse signal.
Answer: If an external trigger source is used, such requirements can be completed using any of NI”s M-series cards with a counter or counting/timer. The counting/counter board is particularly suitable for generating counting reset signals, as other counters on the board can be used to generate a pulse signal of a known frequency.
There are two ways to use the counter input. The first method is a two channel pulse encoding method with Z index. This method uses two input signals, channel A and channel B, to count, while the Z-channel signal is used to reset the count. This method uses the rising edge of channel A to increase the count, while the rising edge of channel B to decrease the count. Therefore, the two pulse encoding method is also called an add/subtract counter.
Set the signal values in channels A and B to determine when the Z-channel signal triggers a count reset. This allows you to perform an accurate count reset without causing loss of counts for channels A and B. Count reset can be completed within one clock cycle of the maximum time base.
For a specific example, if we only need to increase the count, we can ground channel B. The relevant connection relationships for this setting are as follows:
Ctr Source: Incremental count signal (channel A)
Ctr AUX: Decrement count signal (channel B) – connected to ground
Ctr Gate: Reset signal (Z-path index)
The following figure describes the Counting process of resetting the count when the channel A and channel B signals are both low.
Regarding the Z-path index, both page 39 of the 6601/6602 User Manual and page 120 of the M Series User Manual need to be introduced.
The following attachment is a simple VI example using Z-path indexing.
