Shanghai establishes EV test drive center

The second largest introduction of new energy vehicles after buses is taxis. Cities such as Shenzhen and Hangzhou have begun to use new energy taxis, and EVs have also begun to be put into production in small batches. In Shanghai, the host city of this EVI, SAIC Motor plans to launch EV and PHEV in 2012.

During the Shanghai World Expo, SAIC Motor, Shanghai Bus Group and Tongji University formed 11 working groups, using 500 HEVs, 451 EVs and 196 FCVs. These vehicles carry more than 100 million passengers and cover a total driving distance of more than 6 million kilometers. Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng, who spoke on stage during the keynote speech, said, “We will make the most of the experience accumulated at the Shanghai World Expo in the future and devote ourselves to the development of the latest EVs, making Shanghai a pioneer in the research and development of new-generation cars.”

In April, SAIC Motor established the “China (Shanghai) Electric Vehicle International Demonstration City Test Drive Center” in its headquarters factory (Anting Town, Jiading District, Shanghai) and opened it to participants for the first time (Figure 5).

EVs are provided by various automobile manufacturers and test drives are carried out by ordinary users to increase awareness of the popularization of EVs. The center is equipped with more than 10 ordinary chargers.

Various automobile manufacturers can provide EVs, P HEVs and FCVs 　　in this facility for test drives by ordinary users to increase consumers’ awareness of new energy vehicles. A relevant person from SAIC Motor said, “The number of test drives is expected to reach 50,000 people every year.” Shanghai’s Ten Cities Thousand Vehicles Project aims to introduce 4,157 new energy vehicles, but the city also plans to introduce more than 10,000 EVs by itself before 2012. Although China currently does not have a mass-produced electric passenger car like Nissan’s “LEAF” (Chinese name: Leaf), it is accelerating the construction of a system to support Chinese manufacturers. (Special writer: Takeshi Momota)
