Eaton debuted at the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show to showcase its on-board refueling vapor recovery system
Power management company Eaton today demonstrated its innovative on-board refueling oil vapor recovery system
(ORVR) at the 16th Shanghai International Automobile Industry
Exhibition (2015 Shanghai International Auto Show). This vehicle emission control technology has been used in the
United States for nearly 20 years. It can collect fuel vapor emitted during the refueling process and reuse it as fuel, thereby
reducing about 95% of hydrocarbon emissions during vehicle refueling, accounting for 10% of the annual 50% of total vehicle
hydrocarbon emissions.
Industry data shows that during the refueling process of vehicles, a large amount of hydrocarbons are discharged into the atmosphere
through the refueling port, which is one of the important causes of smog. The Chinese government has begun drafting regulations targeting
ORVR requirements to address the country”s severe environmental pollution problems. It is reported that ORVR related regulations will be
officially released in 2015 and implemented in early 2017, gradually extending from Beijing and Guangzhou to other major cities and regions across the country.
Krishnakumar Srinivasan, President of Eaton Vehicle Group Asia Pacific, said: “Currently, there are two main forms of refueling vapor recovery
systems, one is the secondary oil vapor recovery system used at gas stations, and the other is the vehicle-mounted refueling vapor recovery
system. (ORVR). Eaton is committed to helping customers and governments here and around the world solve their toughest power challenges,
and our on-board refueling vapor recovery systems have proven to be one of the most effective solutions to help reduce hydrocarbons.”
From 1998 to 2001, the ORVR system has been fully promoted and applied in the United States. Eaton started early in the research
and development of ORVR and supplied the first fuel vapor valve for the ORVR system in 1997. Today, Eaton already has a very large
fuel vapor valve customer base around the world.
In addition to ORVR systems, Eaton offers a variety of other fuel emissions solutions, including fuel tank isolation valves
(FTIV) for plug-in hybrid vehicles. FTIV is a multi-stage pure electric valve body that can cut off the path when the engine is
ot running, preventing the carbon canister from
being overloaded and preventing fuel vapor from being discharged to the outside world. When the car is running in pure electric
mode, FTIV can effectively control the pressure in the fuel tank and the emission of hydrocarbons into the carbon canister. When the
car is running in engine mode, the carbon canister is desorbed under the vacuum of the intake manifold, and the fuel vapor enters the
engine through the intake manifold for combustion to generate power. Eaton now offers a variety of plug-in hybrid modules based on FTIV technology.
