1、 Why can”t I exceed the speed limit?
1) During the operation of the steam turbine, the centrifugal force on the blade is proportional to the square of the rotating speed, that is to say, although the rotating speed increases slightly, the centrifugal force on the rotor increases geometrically, which is taken into account when the steam turbine is designed, so the overspeed phenomenon is extremely dangerous to the steam turbine.
2) During the design and manufacturing process, the rotor of the rotating machine will have its own self-vibration frequency, which is the frequency corresponding to the critical speed that we should pay attention to when we rush. Therefore, the normal working speed of steam turbine is not within the range of critical speed. However, when the turbine speed exceeds the working speed and reaches twice the frequency of the rotor itself, the vibration of the unit will greatly increase, even greater than the vibration of the unit over the critical speed. Because of the friction between the dynamic and static parts caused by the large vibration of the unit, the vibration of the unit will continue to increase, which leads to a vicious cycle. In serious cases, the steam turbine will be completely scrapped.
3) If the unit is used for power generation, since the grid frequency in China is set at 50Hz, the corresponding turbine speed should also be 3000rpm. If the unit does not work at the rated speed, it will not be able to operate in parallel with the grid. Even in the isolated network operation, if the frequency increases, it will directly lead to the corresponding increase in the rotating speed of the rotating machinery, which will damage the normal operation of the motor, cause the abnormal increase in the output of the pump or fan, make the motor heat, increase the vibration of the pump or fan, and easily lead to the burning accident. At the same time, it will affect the normal operation of the filter and reduce the power quality.
2、 Main causes of turbine overspeed
The overspeed accident of steam turbine is caused by the fault of the speed regulation and protection system of the steam turbine and its own defects, but it is often directly related to the operation and maintenance. It is analyzed and discussed according to different accident causes and fault links.
1. The speed control system has defects:
The task of the turbine speed control system is not only to ensure the normal operation of the turbine at the rated speed, but also to ensure that the speed rise does not exceed the specified allowable value after the turbine load rejection, so the speed control system is the first measure to prevent the turbine overspeed. If the turbine cannot maintain no-load operation after shedding the load, it may cause overspeed. There are several reasons for excessive speed rise after load rejection of steam turbine.
(1) The governing valve cannot be closed or the steam leakage is large.
(2) The extraction check valve is not tight or refuses to act.
(3) The sluggish rate of the speed control system is too large or the regulating parts are jammed.
(4) The operation mode is unreasonable or improperly adjusted.
(5) The unequal rate of speed regulation system is too large.

(7) Improper setting of the speed control system, such as the adjustment range of the synchronizer and the expansion clearance of the steam distribution mechanism do not meet the requirements.
2. Turbine overspeed protection system fault:
(1) The emergency governor does not operate or the operating speed is too high
The operating speed of the emergency governor is generally 10-12% higher than the rated speed, which is the main protection equipment to protect the steam turbine from excessive increase in speed. In addition, different units have not specified additional protection or electric overspeed device with operating speed slightly higher than the emergency governor. If the emergency governor does not act or acts excessively when the turbine speed rises, the main reasons are:
① The heavy hammer or flying ring guide rod is jammed.
② The dynamic and static parts of the heavy hammer or flying ring are not concentric, and they hold their strength during operation. ③ The spring produces excessive radial deformation under the force, resulting in friction with the hole wall.
④ The gap between the kissing buckle or the striking plate is too large, and the impact can not make the slide valve of the emergency governor act after the impact is flying out.
(2) The slide valve of the emergency governor is jammed and cannot operate.
(3) The automatic main throttle valve and governor valve are jammed.
